Infants, Children and Chiropractic
Something I already get asked when I tell people I want to work with kids is, why would my healthy child need chiropractic?
Here’s a little insight:
Being born is tough work! There is a ton of physical pressure and strain on a baby’s spine as they enter the world. These traumas can often go unnoticed at the time however diverse symptoms and conditions can occur later on in life if these misalignments or subluxations are not treated.
We want to make sure our children’s bodies are ready for the amount of growth that is going to occur in the first few years of life. An astonishing amount of human brain development takes place in a short period of time during child development. The brain grows 2-3 times its size in the first two years! Chiropractic care helps in ensuring children are growing properly and helps get rid of any subluxations occurring throughout childhood.
There is a lack of understanding about children and chiropractic. This lack of understanding leads to misconceptions when it comes to infants and chiropractic care. It is time to debunk some of those myths.
MYTH #1 Chiropractors use the same techniques on children as they do on adult patients.
- This statement could not be any more false! Since infants and children are still growing, they need very little pressure applied to their bodies during chiropractic care. Chiropractors do not treat infants and children as “mini adults” since the developmental structures are not fully developed. The technique is more concentrated on positioning rather than pressure.
MYTH #2 Children are so young! They don’t need it!
- Since birth is a traumatic process for the baby, they often have subluxations from labor. These subluxations can lead to things like torticollis, colic, fussiness, gas, digestive issues, irritability, ear infections, just to name a few. As a child gets older chiropractic is proven to help with conditions such as ADHD, headaches, constipation, asthma, allergies and immune function. Paediatric chiropractic can correct these subluxations, which allows for better communication between the brain and the body.
MYTH #3 Chiropractic care for infants and children is just a trend.
- Many people do not know the benefits of chiropractic care for infants and children. Often when people learn about paediatric chiropractic care they think that it is a new realm of chiropractic that is still in the experimental stages. This is not the case. Chiropractic care for children dates back to the 1980s. In 1986 Dr. Larry Webster helped re-establish chiropractic care for infants and children. He founded the ICPA which educated chiropractors on how to best treat children.
